NUGS commends organized labour for calling off strike
The National Union of Ghana Students and Ghana National Union of Professional Students on Wednesday commended Organized Labour for calling off their intended nationwide demonstration.
The unions also commended the government for having a listening ear to the plight of Ghanaians and subsidizing the cost of electricity until full cost is achieved and absorbed as much as 25 per cent.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, Ms Latif Jasaw, President of University Students’ Association Ghana (USAG), said the reduction in tariff from 78 per cent to 59 per cent was a very welcoming gesture, a victory and win for all.
She said: “We ask that there should be immediate action for ordinary Ghanaians to feel the result in their expenditure and Government must pay the GHC410.00 million promised to the utility companies to ensure a steady supply of electricity.”
Ms Jasaw noted that water and electricity was not supposed to be free and had not been free, so there was no reason why citizens who pay for these services should be made to suffer the inefficiencies and in some instances, outright incompetence of some managers of these utilities.
She appealed to the Government to intervene in solving the admission challenges that threatened to deny over 30,000 students seeking admission for higher learning in the Polytechnics in Ghana.
She reminded the President about his commitment in converting Polytechnics into Technical Universities during his first national address and also called on stakeholders in the educational sector to collaborate with government in the positive goal accomplishment of Ghana’s education system.
