Turkish firm introduces new road building technology in Tema
The construction of a three-kilometre stretch of road in the Tema industrial area is being undertaken with the introduction of a road building technology that could give roads a longer life span.
The project is being piloted to test the Turkish technology CONSOLID material to see how efficient it would help in road construction and cut down cost in the long term.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Stephen Attipoe, Tema Metropolitan Urban Roads Engineer, said the reason for using CONSOLID is purposely for chemical stabilization and minimization of cost “because the CONSOLID material works with clay and that will not increase cost”.
He said the material has comparative advantage over other materials like laterite, which is used in the construction of the base of roads.
Mr Attipoe said the process adopted is a very good one and has a bright future in the country.
Mr Joe Plange, Site Engineer, CONSOLID Ghana Limited, the Turkish based company undertaking the project, told the Ghana News Agency that the project being undertaken is scheduled for completion in six weeks.
He said the 1.75 km stretch has been constructed within a period of two weeks, stretching from the TT Brothers area to the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) junction.
“We scarify the material with the existing soil and mix it with the consolid, C44, solid dry and water, and the Reclaimer is used to mix it before its application on the surface.”
He said the C44 is applied four times, twice beneath and twice above the soil respectively and the sheep foot is used to compress the applied chemicals on the surface “and finally we use the Roller Compactor to smoothen the surface. It takes one week for the applied chemicals to dry.”
Mr Plange said his outfit is expecting the Laboratory Technicians in the next few days for testing, before asphalt is rolled on the surface.
