The Government has been urged to ensure a more deliberate and aggressive effort to raise conditions at the various tourist centres to boost their appeal.

Mr. Partrick Amofa, a Patron of the Water and Energy Conservation Organization (WECO) at the Saint Louis Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi, said the returns could be tremendous.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) puts the value of Ghana’s travel and tourism sector at $2.1 billion – representing 5.2 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

Speaking after he had led WECO members in the school to the Barekese Dam, Mr Amofa said everything should be done to make the country a major tourist destination.

He said  bad roads should be tackled and more recreational facilities created and added “this is the way to go to grow the economies of communities where these sites are found, to create wealth and jobs for the local population.”

The students were there as part of an educational tour.
