UEW graduates 6,700 students

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw has said that Ghana needed to attract and retain good people into the teaching profession to enhance the quality of the educational system.

Professor Asabere-Ameyaw said this at the 18th congregation of the UEW at Winneba on Friday.

A total of 6,708 students graduated and awarded with certificates, Diploma and degrees.

He stated that Teacher Training institutions must see more improvement in infrastructure, equipment and quality workforce, adding that, good performance by teachers must be rewarded and every effort must be made to retain teachers.

The VC said the UEW over the years, had seen steady growth in student enrolment and development.

According to him the current student population of the University is 43,460, out of this 15,564 (36 per cent) pursuing their studies through distance and 10,409 through sandwich/part-time.

He said full-time students of the University was 17,487, representing 40 per cent.

The chairman of the University Governing Council, Dr. Emmanuel Kenneth Andoh expressed concern that large number of professional teachers trained by the university roamed the streets without jobs.

According to him it was estimated that about 48-51 per cent of teachers recruited by the Ghana Education Service (GES) currently teaching at the pre-tertiary level are not professionally qualified.

Dr Andoh, who was also the Omanhene of Enyan-Maim Traditional Area, appealed to the government to commit and release more funds for the university to speedily complete some of the urgently needed ongoing infrastructural projects on its four campuses.
