Project to connect MPs and constituents launched

A Parliamentary Awareness Project (PAP) was launched in Accra on Wednesday to create a communication platform between Members of Parliament (MPs) and their constituents.

The project, initiated by Network for Democracy and Economic Development, and Speak Africa Foundation, among others, was funded by Star Ghana and aims at educating constituents on how to connect with their MP’s when the need arises.

Nana Fredua Ofori-Atta, Chief Executive of Three Heads and Pen Media Production, said after the program, participants would know what to ask from their MP’s and what not to ask, adding, there was the need for proper communication connection between the constituents and the parliamentarians for better understanding.

He said a survey had been conducted which proved that some people went to their MP’s at the Parliament House to ask them for money for their funerals, engagements and child naming ceremonies among other things which was not right.

Nana Ofori-Atta said some community members always grumbled for not seeing their MP’s again after elections, especially when they were called to attend programs, adding that this was worrying.

He said the programme was not to advise people to leave the parties they supported but to teach participants how to organise events to ensure that invitation sent to their MP’s would be honoured.

Some of the participants were the Federation of Ashaiman Youth, Ghana Muslim Mission, Civic Education Club, Dressmakers and Hairdressers Associations and Church groups.
