Forbes names Nigeria’s Agric Minister 2013 Africa Person

Forbes magazine has named Nigerian Agriculture Minister Akinwumi Adesina as its 2013 Africa Person of the Year.

Forbes, who made the announcement this week, said Adesina won the prize for his bold reforms in Nigeria’s agriculture sector.

The magazine said Mr Adesina has empowered more than six million farmers across Nigeria to embrace agriculture as a business.

Accepting the prize, Mr Adesina said “I am truly honoured and humbled by this prestigious award, which I dedicate to Africa’s farmers and the new cadre of young business entrepreneurs who have discovered the hidden gem for sustainable wealth creation on our continent – Agriculture.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Kenya’s Equity Bank, Dr James Mwangi, won the 2012 edition of the prize.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria was recipient of the first award in 2011.
