Beneficiaries told not to sell start-up kits

Mr Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma Central, has cautioned beneficiaries of his sewing machine support initiative, against the sale of their start-up kits.

He said the initiative to support young men and women who have completed apprenticeship training and graduated in dressmaking, is to encourage them to start their own small businesses and to create employment opportunities in their areas.

Miss Helen Okai, assembly member of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) gave the warning on behalf of the MP when she presented 12 sewing machines at the cost of GHc3,000 to graduates of the Abossey Okai Zone at a ceremony at Dansoman in Accra.

The graduates went into apprenticeship with the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers’ Association.

Miss Okai said it was the MP’s belief that the provision of such interventions, apart from improving the lives of the people, was a long-term investment in human resource development which benefited a broad section of the masses.

She said the MP would continue to collaborate with the executives of the Association to ensure a holistic development of young men and women in the constituency.

Miss Okai said; “Your success will be based on how you portray yourselves to your customers,” and advised them to honour their obligations to the Association.

Mr Stephen Kubi, Abossey Okai Zonal Chairman of the Association told the GNA that the beneficiaries went through routine practical training to ensure that what they had learnt over the period was understood.

He was satisfied with the work of the new graduates since they did not have any previous knowledge of their vocation, but are now doing well.

Rev (Mrs) Faustina Amponsah, who chaired the function commended the MP for his continuous support and commitment to the provision of start-up kits to graduates, and called on them to strive to improve on what they have learnt to meet their tax and other obligations.

The 12 graduates used the occasion to showcase the various dresses they sew during the training period.
