Farmer remanded for possessing firearms and ammunition
A Circuit Court in Accra has remanded into custody Asafoatse Armah, a farmer, for possessing firearms and ammunition and also destroying farm produce.
The firearms include a single barrel gun and six live cartridges, a short gun and a pistol with 16 rounds of ammunition.
Armah, however claimed the single barrel gun and ammunition were planted in his vehicle by his detractors.
Held for possessing firearms and ammunition without authority and causing unlawful damage to farm produce at Ashifola near Oboom- Amasaman, Armah has pleaded not guilty.
Armah is expected to reappear before the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri on January 7,
Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) P. A. Morkeh said the complainant Edward A. Quaye is a farmer residing at Adeiso in the Eastern Region.
On December16, this year, at about 0700 hours the Greater Accra Regional Police Command had information that Armah was winning sand on his farm and was causing damage to the farm produce.
Prosecution said the Police proceeded to the scene and arrested Armah.
According to prosecution one single barrel gun with six live cartridges and pistol with 16 rounds of ammunition were found hidden in between the driver and passenger seats.
Armah denied ever hiding any gun, pistol and live cartridges in the vehicle, saying they were put there by his detractors.
Accused person revealed that the land belonged to his grandfather who had paid royalties to the people of Ashifola but was attacked any time he went there.
