Irate youth blocks deplorable Takoradi main road
Hundreds of irate youth in New Takoradi on Tuesday morning blocked the main road linking Takoradi to the town over its deplorable condition.
They burnt car tyres and demonstrated against the city authorities for failing to fulfill their promise of tarring the road in spite of several appeals.
The blockade resulted in traffic congestion along the route and affected the activities of companies located in the area.
Over 50 police personnel were dispatched to the place to remove the barricade and maintain law and order.
The Assembly member for lower New Takoradi Electoral Area, Mr. Emmanuel Edwin Adoko, said vehicles plying the route pollute the atmosphere with dust.
He said the two assembly members in the area had met city authorities and other stakeholders and agreed that the road should be graded while waiting for it to be tarred as part of the Takoradi Port expansion project
Some companies that ply the route included Ghana Cement Manufacturing Company, Ghana Flour Mills and Ghana Manganese and Bauxite companies with their heavy duty trucks worsening the state of the road.
The Public Relations Officer of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Mr. John Laste, said the road had been captured under the Takoradi Port expansion project and appealed to the people to exercise patience.
He said although the Urban Road Department started work on the road early this year under its Emergency project, work had to stop since the port expansion project had captured it.
He appealed to the Assembly members in the area to inform the people about such plans to avoid embarking on unlawful demonstrations.
