Water crises hit Tapumu community

water-2The Tapumu community in the Lambussie/Karni District has appealed to the government to save the community from an imminent water crises resulting from poor rainfall last year.

Mr. Zuobog Philip Neri, Assemblyman for Tapumu- Chetu Electoral area, said the only source of water for the people was an open stream that runs through the community and with low water levels due to poor rains, the stream would soon dry up.

He the GNA in an interview that with the increasing use of agro-chemicals for pest and weed control along the stream, the water was also being exposed to chemical pollution which posed a health hazard to the people.

Mr Zeri said information gathered from three nearby health facilities showed that nearly 90 per cent all cases reported were water related illnesses.

“We have been told time without number that efforts are under way to get the community boreholes, the truth however is that it may come at the time when everyone in the community is dead”, he said.

The community, in January 2012, threatened to boycott the biometric voters’ registration exercise citing the neglect of the area in the provision of water and other development projects as their reason.

They rescinded their decision to boycott the exercise following pleas from the assemblyman and highly placed public officials in the district.
