AFCON 2015: CAF fines Equatorial Guinea $100,000 for fans violence
The Disciplinary Panel of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has ordered Equatorial Guinea, host of the 30th edition of the African Cup of Nations to bear the cost of treatment for Ghanaian supporters injured in the semi final chaos caused by the homers.
According to information available to GNA Sports, 36 supporters were injured following crowd trouble in Malabo that saw the host fans attack their Ghanaian counterparts after the Black Stars went ahead in the match.
CAF has said in a communiqué available to GNA Sports that the host would play a match behind closed doors should there be a repeat of the incident in future, paving way for supporters to be present when Equatorial Guinea play the Democratic Republic of Congo in the third and fourth placed match on Saturday.
CAF said that “Pursuant to articles 82, 83 and 151 of the disciplinary code of CAF, respectively related to the principles of conduct, responsibility and safety in the organization of games, the disciplinary panel decided:
“To have the Equatorial Guinean party cover the cost of treatment of all injured persons during the match.
It said “14 fans were transferred to hospital units for further investigations. One case requires close monitoring”.
Equatorial Guinea has also been fined US$100,000 (£65,000), for the crowd trouble on Thursday, following a 0-3 loss to Ghana.
The match was halted on the 82 minutes after Ghana fans congregated behind a goal post in a bid to evade missiles being thrown at them by home supporters.
In the over 30 minutes hold up, the Police moved in to restore order, using tear gas and batons as a police helicopter hovered over the stadium.
Play resumed after 30 minutes where both teams played for additional three minutes to complete Ghana’s win.
