Allow political parties to partake in District Level Elections – CSO
Mr. Umar Faruk Ishak, Executive Director of the Sustainable Centre Integrated Ghana (Foundation), a civil society organization has suggested that the District Level Elections (DLEs) be made partisan in future to allow active political party participation.
He observed that the exclusion of political parties in the DLEs had not done the country any good, adding that, these political parties still found their way into the process invisibly and unregulated.
Mr. Ishak who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Wa on Monday, noted that if political parties were mandated constitutionally to partake in the process, it would introduce quality into the DLEs and bring about level headed participation.
He said if this happens there would not be the need for government to appoint any 30 percent members to the assemblies.
The Executive Director of the Sustainable Centre Integrated Ghana also underscored the need for civil society organisations to partner the EC to mount platforms for the aspirants to enable them put across their campaign messages to assist the electorate to make inform choices.
Mr. Ishak noted in this regard that his organization was therefore partnering the EC to mount the platforms for all Assembly and Unit Committee aspirants in the Wa Municipality to prepare them towards the upcoming elections.
He said the platform will also help the electorate to know what to demand from their Assembly members when they elect them.
He highlighted his organization’s support in the form of the provision of chairs and canopies to make community members sit comfortably whiles interacting with their aspirants.
It had since covered 15 out of the 31 electoral areas in the Wa Municipality and would continue with the rest in the remaining days to election.
Mr. Ishak expressed the Foundation’s appreciation to the Electoral Commission for the opportunity it gave to civil society organizations to be part of this year’s electioneering process and expressed the hope for more future partnership with the Commission.
