President Mahama receives Dzamefe Commission Report on World Cup fiasco
President John Dramani Mahama on Monday gave the assurance that government would implement the recommendations of the Justice Dzamefe Commission to enhance sports development in the country.
He said, as human institutions that were fallible, the football management and other stakeholders might have made mistakes in the past, but the recommendations could guide them against the repetition of such mistakes.
President Mahama gave the assurance when he received the Justice Senyo Dzamefe report at the Flagstaff House, Kanda.
On August 4, 2014, government commissioned a three- man committee, Chaired by Justice Senyo Dzamefe, following the negative fall outs from Black Star campaign in the 2014 Brazil World Cup competition.
Established by Constitutional Instrument (C I82) with CI 65, giving them the guidelines to operate, the commission’s other members are; Moses Foh Amoaning, Private Legal Practitioner and Kofi Anokye, a Football enthusiast.
The terms of reference of the commission included, the preparations of the Black Stars team before the games, management of the team, financing of activities leading to the competition, treatment of the funds generated and to make recommendations based on their findings.
President Mahama said although the performance of the Black Stars was abysmal at the World Cup, the technical team and players subsequently managed to redeem their image in their sterling performance in the African Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea.
He said the implementation of the recommendations would in future equip government with the necessary knowledge of what could be done to improve on sports in Ghana.
President Mahama, who in turn presented the report to the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General for study and advice, gave the assurance that its implementation would also help in the harnessing of talents in other sports disciplines.
He commended the commission for the time, efforts and diligence in the investigations, assuring them that, their findings would be utilized for the general good.
Justice Dzamefe on behalf of his colleagues commended President Mahama and his administration for giving them the opportunity to serve the country in that capacity.
He said in all, 87 people, including; State Officials, players and other stakeholders were interviewed both in camera and in public hearings.
Justice Dzamefe said apart from the public hearings that were held in Accra, the Commission also went to Tamale, Kumasi and Takoradi, as part of their fact finding mission.
He commended the Presidency and Parliament for providing them with the needed support to carry out their duties effectively “adding that” they managed to help us to investigate the issues to the best of our ability.
