Ghana doctors threaten mass resignation over Conditions of Service Document

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed its dissatisfaction with the Government’s handling of issues relating to securing conditions of service document for its members, saying they would resign en masse should government fail to do so by June 30.

The Association said with barely a month to the deadline it gave to the Government to ensure that medical doctors in the public sector had a negotiated and signed conditions of service document, the latter had started what it describe as” some machinations” to frustrate the process

At a press conference in Cape Coast, after the end of its third National Executive Meeting, on Sunday, the President and General Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Kwabena Opoku Adusei and Dr. Frank Serebour, respectively, directed members to attend weekly Divisional meetings from Friday June 5, for sensitization and planning towards the deadline.

Dr. Adusei said the GMA had had negotiations with successive governments for the past 10 years and, therefore, wanted the public to hold the Government responsible for any industrial disturbances after the June 30 deadline.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the 56th Annual General Conference of the GMA on November nine last year, it gave government a deadline of June 30 this year to ensure that doctors in the public sector had negotiated and signed its conditions of service document.

The communiqué cautioned that the affected doctors would consider themselves unemployed if government failed to secure the conditions of service document for them.

The GMA has, therefore, warned that it was strictly going to adhere to the June 30 deadline because the Government had not taken any steps to address the issue of lack of conditions of service for its members.
