Radio station invests in solar, to save GH¢2m on electricity bills
Volta Premier Radio of Ho Polytechnic, will in the next 40 years be spared erratic electricity supply and save a total of GH¢2,004,588 in electricity bills if electricity cost went up by 20 percent every decade.
This follows the installation of 40 number 250 Mono Solar Crystalline PV panels at the radio station at a cost of GH¢250,000, following a Build Operate Transfer (BOT) agreement with Adzepa Energies of Ghana.
The facility’s back-up system consists of one number 3 KW Inverter, one Number 48V 60 A Charge Control, 20 number 12V/100AH Deep Cycle batteries.
The facility was commissioned by Professor Emmanuel Kodzo Sakyi, Rector of the Polytechnic on Friday. It represented the icing-on-the-cake for the Station which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Paul Baidoo-Cudjoe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Adzepa Energies, said his company would operate the facility for 12 years and offer 25 years guarantee.
He said in those 12 years the Station will save GH¢1,110,924 on cost of electricity “assuming electricity cost increases by 20 percent every 10 (ten) years.”
Commissioning the facility, Professor Sakyi said the search for alternative source of energy for the Station was “long over-due.”
He said the facility represented a land-mark evidence of actualizing the Polytechnic’s vision of setting the pace for providing solutions to local, national and world-wide challenges.
He said “we have to look for solutions to problems” instead of “lamenting about problems.”
Professor Sakyi said all segments of the Polytechnic community must rally their talents in a collective effort at resolving challenges instead of peddling rumours and destructive criticisms.
He said all those who sought to grind the wheel of progress at the Polytechnic will also celebrate the day.
Meanwhile Adzepa Energies is to sponsor the best graduate in Electrical Engineering from Ho Polytechnic for further studies.
