Ghanaians urged to eat iron and copper-rich foods
Mrs Afua Owusu -Ansah, Dietician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, has advised people to endeavour to eat foods that contain lots of iron and copper to boost their haemoglobin levels.
This, he said would help prevent iron-deficiency anaemia (shortage of blood).
She said anaemia especially in children less than five years and pregnant women could be fatal and called on the public to eat more green leafy vegetables, legumes-beans and plantain to boost their kidney and liver by building more red blood cells.
Mrs Afua Owusu –Ansah said drinking more water and having enough rest could also help the body to build strong immune system.
The dietician who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency said wrong dietary habits could lead to serious health challenges and counselled that the people took very good care of what they ate to prolong their lives.
Mrs Owusu-Ansah however cautioned against over eating, taking more fatty, sugary and refined foods as well as eating late at night, so as to stay healthy and strong.
She advised parents whose wards suffer from blood deficiency diseases such as sickle cell disease to adhere to proper dietary regimes and give nutritious foods to their children to make them healthy always.
