Nana Akufo-Addo wants Commission of Enquiry to investigate police brutalities
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling for an independent Commission of Enquiry to investigate the alleged brutalities meted out against unarmed civilians who embarked on a demonstration, organized by a pressure group called ‘Let My Vote Count Alliance’ in Accra.
Nana Skufo-Addo, who condemned the actions of the police, also disagreed with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive that the police administration should conduct an internal enquiry to review the alleged police brutalities against some of the members of the pressure group.
Nana Akufo-Addo was speaking in Tamale, in the Northern Region, as part of his “Rise and Build” tour, stressing that, a commission of inquiry should be set up as a matter of urgency at the instance of the president to investigate the alleged brutalities.
He was however not convinced the police administration would be neutral in such investigations since the hierarchy of the police had already taken a stance and defended their actions.
Nana Akufo-Addo said an internal enquiry by the police would lead to a cover-up because the hierarchy of the police would find it difficult to reverse the stands they had already taken.
It was alleged that tear gas and rubber bullets were fired at the demonstrators, who were on a procession to present a petition to the Electoral Commission and the Parliament of Ghana over the current voters’ register, which the group believes is bloated.
The action of the police left several persons injured and others arrested.
Nana Akufo-Addo described as a shame, the action resorted to by the police against the unarmed civilians, whom he said, were only exercising their democratic rights.
He emphasized that the NPP would not relent in its call for a new voters register ahead of the 2016 elections, stressing that, the country’s voter’s register was bloated.
