Energy crisis costs Blue Skies $330,000 in 2015
The fruit juice producer, Blue Skies, has already spent $330,000 in 2015 on electricity generation to keep production steady amidst Ghana’s energy crisis.
The harrowing revelation was contained in the speech of World Bank President Dr Jim Yong Kim who was in Accra to mark “End Poverty Day.”
The multinational which employs about 3,000 people, has not been spared the effects of “dum-sor” and is said to be relying on diesel-powered electricity generators to keep its operations in Ghana alive during the frequent power cuts.
Dr Kim noted that Ghana faces possible setbacks to its progress in poverty reduction from economic slowdown, attributable in part to the energy crisis.
On its part, he said the World Bank is providing $700 million in guarantees for Ghana’s Sankofa gas project which will fuel up to 40 per cent of Ghana’s currently installed generation capacity, improve reliability, and replace polluting fuels with cleaner and more affordable energy.
“Ghana will be able to reduce fuel imports by 12 million barrels per year and CO2 emissions by about 8 million tonnes. This will not fix the energy problem completely in Ghana but improving the availability of clean energy is a very important part of the solution”, he said.
