AMA receives Turkish Government’s support for Odaw defence wall

Okoe -AMA-mayor-Turkey-ambassadorThe Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has commended the Turkish Government for $100,000 in financial support to the construction of a defence wall around the Odaw River in Accra to prevent unhealthy human activities.

Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive commended the Turkish Ambassador Madam Nesrin Bayazit, who is also in charge of Sierra Leone and Liberia, when she visited him at his office to present a dummy cheque to Vanderpuije.

Dr Vanderpuije said the project is to protect the community from the devastating effects such as the flood disaster that occurred on June 3, resulting in the death of many people.

He said works on the project include the construction of armoured rock between the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Graphic Road along the river to mitigate the effect of human activities into the lagoon.

“A 5.6 kilometre wall will also be extended to Old Fadama”, he said.

He expressed Ghana’s appreciation to Turkey for the initiative and gave an assurance that the money would be used judiciously.

The Turkish Ambassador also expressed her government’s deep condolence to the families of victims of the June flooding and fire disasters.
