EC postpones 2016 elections ‘until further notice’
The Chairwoman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Charlotte Osei, has announced that the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections have been postponed ‘almost indefinitely’ while she assesses the security situation in the country.
She made this known in an interview with journalists after her presentation at the stakeholders’ forum at Alisa Hotel last week.
‘I have held a series of meetings with members of the Ghana Peace Council,’ she told reporters, ‘and they were unanimous in their views that holding elections next year will threaten Ghana’s stability. In fact, they warn that the destabilising effects of holding elections will be 100 times greater than the effects of creating a new voters’ register.’
When she was asked if she would comply with the committee she has tasked to consider the various proposals if it suggests a new register, she responded:
‘Frankly, that’ll be a waste of their dear time! If they bring such a recommendation to me, I’ll politely thank them and then proceed to place it on a shelf in the darkest corner of the darkest room at the Electoral Commission. Read my lips, nothing is happening until the Ghana Peace Council instructs me that the security threat is over.’
Meanwhile, sources close to the NDC headquarters indicate that General Mosquito is expected to issue a press release on Monday congratulating the EC boss for ‘exhibiting the wisdom of Solomon.’
We are informed that the statement will be generously strewn with biblical and Shakespearean allusions, and will be titled: ‘A Daniel come to judgement,’ a reference to Portia’s sublime display of wisdom which saved her husband’s benefactor from the vengeful knife of Shylock.
