Mobile money transactions are growing in Ghana. And the Bank of Ghana is building a platform to integrate mobile money into mainstream banking.
The Governor of the Bank, Dr. Henry Wampah told journalists in Accra Monday November 16, 2015 that the Bank is ‘working’ on building a platform to integrate the system into mainstream banking, adding that the mobile money transactions have started going through the banking system.
Mrs. Elly Ohene-Adu of the Banking Department of the Bank of Ghana says as at June 2015, about GH¢229 million mobile money transaction flows have been recorded.
Two of the six mobile telecommunications operators in the country have between them more than six million mobile money customers.
In August, MTN reported that it has registered more than 4.8 million mobile money customers.
Airtel announced in April that it has registered more than 1.5 million customers, adding that there had been a significant increase over the average monthly transactions of 500,000 in 2014 to over one million transactions in March 2015 alone.
Tigo Ghana and Vodafone Ghana also offer mobile money services, but figures are not available for the two.
