Ghana honours 33 at national awards day 2015
Twenty-eight Ghanaians and five foreigners have been decorated with national awards at the 2015 national honours and awards day, for their outstanding contributions in various fields of national development.
Fifteen were honoured with “Companion of the Order of the Volta” award, five with the “Officer of the Order of the Volta” and ten with “Member of the Order of the Volta”, by President John Mahama, Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur and the Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.
Two were honoured with the Grand Medal, and one other posthumously.
The national awards are presented to persons who have made immense and recognized contributions in sectors such as the civil service, military, prisons service, education and public health, agriculture, commerce and industry, the judiciary, scientific and other research, sports, culture and the arts, and the financial sector.
President Mahama reiterated the potential of the national honours and the opportunity that it presents, to stimulate patriotism and inspire succeeding generations to nationalism and selfless duty.
“For those that we notice and award, we do so as a stimulus to others, to place national service and service to humanity above self,” he said
He noted that in the course of the year, national awards had been conferred on former Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr Kwadwo Afari Djan, and 42 members of the Ghana Medical Brigade who served in Liberia during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, as well as Mr Sean Graham in England, and Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Alsaud in Saudi Arabia.
The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, who was one of the awardees, expressed gratitude on behalf of the award recipients, to the President and the people of Ghana for recognizing and rewarding their ‘meagre contributions’ to development.
