Suhum assembly fails to endorse President’s nominee for Chief Executive

suhum municipal assemblyThe Suhum Municipal Assembly has rejected Ms Margaret Ansei, the President’s nominee, for the position of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), at a special assembly meeting.

She polled 23 out of the 48 votes cast, and therefore did not meet the two thirds required from the Assembly to endorse her nomination.

Ms Ansei, who is the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Suhum Constituency in the November elections, is the first woman to be nominated as the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive.

Mr Antwi-Boasiako Sekyere, the outgoing Eastern Regional Minister, said the choice of the nominee was the President’s prerogative and the endorsement was a privilege to the assembly members.

He expressed his disappointment at the failure of the assembly to endorse the nominee and expressed the hope that “all those who voted against the nominee would change their mind in the interest of Suhum’s development”.

By the Local Government Act, the Assembly has to convene a meeting after 10 days for another round of voting to determine the head of the Assembly.
