Schools asked to stop ‘sieving’ pupils for BECE

Mrs Vida Aku Sika Tete Dzobo, Proprietress of Dora Memorial International School Complex, has called on Junior High Schools to stop “sieving” pupils for Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

She said the practice had become the norm for private schools, so they could boast of a 100 per cent pass.

Mrs Dzobo, speaking at the launch of the 30th anniversary celebration of Dora Memorial International School, said the act was “a cruel damage to the image and identity” of children.

She appealed to the Ghana Education Service to intervene and seek the interest and welfare of all children.

Mrs Dzobo, a retired educationist, said children have different talents and must be helped to identify and develop them; they should not be condemned for being slow learners at the basic level.

Ms Fafali Dzobo, Executive Director of Dora Memorial International School, said the School is noted for effective child-centred teaching and has touched the lives of over 3, 000 people since 1987.

“We are a private school but non-profit making. All resources are used in developing our students and we are happy with that,” she said.

Mr Kofi Amoah, a journalist and past student of the School, said the roles of private schools cannot be understated educational sector.
