UNICEF, Unilever to improve access to safe water in Ghana, other countries
Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire have been selected by UNICEF and UNILEVER to become the first batch of countries in sub-Saharan Africa to benefit from a partnership between the two organisations that would seek to improve access to safe water.
The new partnership would include financial investment as well as strategic engagement with government and civil society which would also aim to implement innovative community and school-based programmes to promote sustainable management of safe water and also to improve hygiene and hand washing practices.
In a statement sent to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday, Madam Leila Gharagozloo-Pakkala, UNICEF’s Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, said Africa’s population was increasing and access to safe drinking water remained a serious problem for present and future generations.
“Over the next two years, this partnership will not only ensure children and communities have access to safe drinking water, but that it is sustainable and scalable across the continent”, she said.
