Road crashes claim 87 lives in Brong-Ahafo

Eighty seven people perished and 155 injured in road crashes from January to February in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Mr Mensah Abrampa Agyabeng, the Regional Manager of National Road Safety Commission ((NRSC), has said.

He said the Region in January-February recorded 82 road crashes involving 121 vehicles while 14 pedestrians were knocked down.

Mr Agyabeng said this at a media briefing in Sunyani to launch the 2016 Good Friday-Easter road safety programme.

He said the trend of road crashes in the Region this year was very alarming because the vehicles involved were 67 in January and 54 in February.

Mr Agyabeng said the NRSC had intensified its education because 90 percent of road crashes on such festive occasions were avoidable but they occurred mainly due to human errors.

He appealed to drivers and pedestrians to observe road safety regulations to prevent road crashes.

Police Superintendent Oppong Asirifi, Regional Commander of the Motto Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), said road crashes increased during festive occasions because of the high demand of passenger for vehicles.

He said some drivers also took advantage of that and did not take time to apply the driving rules and regulations often leading to the loss of lives.

Superintendent Asirifi said drunkenness, driving along the shoulders of the roads, over- speeding, wrong over-taking, over-loading and irregular maintenance of their vehicles were some of the factors that caused road crashes in the country.
