University of Ghana pegs mature student entrance exams age at 27
The age for matured students entrance examination of the University of Ghana (UG) has been revised from 25 to 27 years to ensure academic excellence.
This would assist the University in its responsibility to develop and produce world class human resource to meet the demands of national development and the international market.
The Dean of School of Performing Arts of the University, Professor Kofi Agyekum made the announcement at the 13th congregation and the 21st matriculation ceremony of the Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG) at the weekend at Fiapre in the Sunyani West District of Brong-Ahafo Region.
A total of 436 males and females who pursued four-year degree programmes graduated whilst 197 freshmen and women were also admitted during the institution’s January admission to commence various degree programmes in the 2015/2016 academic year.
Prof Agyekum who was speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the UG, Prof Ernest Aryeetey said the mandate of the CUCG could be achieved through quality and enhanced teaching, innovative research work and knowledge dissemination.
He commended the Catholic University for the good strides it is making in the areas of academic work and physical infrastructural development.
Prof Agyekum stated that the Catholic University had attained the required number of years for a charter and gave the assurance that the UG is looking forward to support the application.
He counselled the graduates to be truthful, hardworking and dedicated wherever they find themselves in the world of competitive job market to reflect the ideals of the University.
The acting VC of the University, Dr Anthony K. Bonnah Koomson said the declining enrolment and financial instability has become major concerns of the institution.
He said the Governing Council of the University had therefore demanded a comprehensive report of the causes and strategies to respond to it.
Dr Koomson said the University had since its inception rolled out a total of 5,567 graduates and currently the student population stand at 2,960 which signifies a drop of 544 from the 3,409 reported in October 2015.
The Catholic Bishop of Sunyani and Episcopal Chairman of the CUCG, Most Reverend Mathew Kwasi Gyamfi, said the University sees education as a tool for advancing and enhancing knowledge in the society by nurturing the intellectual faculties of students and helping them to develop a capacity for sound judgement.
He entreated parents and guardians to continue to support their children and wards in diverse ways and encourage them to become the pride of their lives.
