Ministry selects Tigo Cash for ‘Output Based Aid’ project

Tigo2The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has selected the most preferred mobile money wallet in the country, Tigo Cash, as its payment platform to help mobilise households’ contributions for the ‘Global Partnership for Output Based Aid’ (GPOBA) Sanitation Project.

GPOBA is being implemented as part of a World Bank funded programme to improve sanitation and access to water in low income urban communities within the Greater Accra metropolis. It will provide partial subsidies for the provision of 6,600 household toilet facilities which will benefit approximately 132,000 people.

Some of the areas earmarked for the first phase of the project include, Madina Zongo, Libya Quarters, Sabon Zongo, Sukura, Weija, Oblogo, Ashale Botwe Old Town, Tema Manhean, Sakumono village and Ayi Mensah.

Subsequent areas expected to benefit from the project include Lashibi, Nungua Old Town, Lomnava, Agape, Fanmilk, Grushie Town, old Ashongman village, Jamestown, Asofan, Ofankor, Amamoley, Valco Flats, Lebanon, UN, Washington Redco, Adoteiman, Klagon, Adjei Kojo, Otano and Aben Waha

With over 12, 000 agents nationwide, the selection of Tigo Cash for the project highlights the increasingly important role Tigo Cash continues to play in the advancement of financial inclusion in the country, particularly among the unbanked.

Since its inception in 2011, Tigo Cash has revolutionized access to financial services by 70 percent of Ghana’s population who remain unbanked. The award-winning platform has evolved from being a money wallet service to a payment platform with innovative features such as payment of bills, goods and services, purchase of airtime, and payroll facilitation for small and medium scale businesses.

The service has also developed innovative products and services to facilitate productivity for cocoa and rice farmers across the country.

Tigo Cash has won several awards since its launch; with key ones being ‘Best Mobile Money Development in Africa’ at the Mobile Money Global Awards – Dubai 2013; ‘Best Mobile Money Service’ at the 2013 Ghana Telecom Awards, and ‘Best Mobile Money Product in West Africa’ at the 2013 Kalahari Mobile Money Awards in Nigeria.
