Estimated 4.3 million drones shipped in 2015

There is increasing interest and growth in the use of drones for different purposes around the world, resulting in an expanding market for the technology.

According to Gfk, one of the world’s largest research companies, an estimated 4.3 million drones were shipped in 2015.

Speaking at the just ended IFA Global Press Conference in Hong Kong, Jurgen Boyny of Gfk noted that the market for drones is expanding and there is a huge potential for growth.

The increase in the drones market he said is up 167 per cent year-on-year, generating revenues of $1.7 billion.

Boyny indicated that in the UK alone consumer drones generated a value of £12 million in 2015.

He however, pointed out some of the challenges that consumer drones, are yet to overcome.

He said the drone market is till very young, lacks night vision and has short battery life – these are challenges yet to be overcome.
