GNAT demands salaries of validated teachers

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has asked the Government to pay the 14,000 teachers who have been validated and cleared by the Audit Service otherwise it would advise itself.

The General Secretary of GNAT, Mr. David Ofori Acheampong, who was speaking to the GNA on the sidelines of his send-off ceremony in Cape Coast, said the Government should implement its part of the agreement to pay them.

Mr. Acheampong, who until his elevation was the Central Regional Secretary of GNAT, expressed the hope that the Government would prevent an industrial unrest by effecting the payment immediately, after its meeting with the Association on Monday, April 26, 2016.

It would be recalled that a communiqué signed by stakeholders at a meeting by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, Ministry of Education, National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), stated that the arrears for 2013 and 2014 were not to be paid until the authorities validated all the processes necessary for the facilitation of payment.

The list of teachers who had been cleared after the validation exercise in February this year, had since been submitted, but there has not been any response from the Government, he said

Speaking at the ceremony, the Regional Secretary of GNAT, Mr. Abedi Buadu, praised Mr Acheampong for his open-door policy and the consultative spirit with which he carried out his mandate during his three-year stay in the Region.

He said Mr Acheampong was a dynamic leader, who brought positive change in the administration of the Association in the Region and beyond, and pledged the unflinching support of all members for the successful implementation of all his programmes at the GNAT headquarters

In response, Mr Acheampong thanked the executives in the Region for their tremendous support that had catapulted him into that high office, adding that his seniors, colleagues and subordinates had all contributed immensely to his success.

He said in his efforts to push the issues of GNAT in the Region to an appreciable level, he might have offended some people and appealed to those people to forgive him.

Mr Acheampong said that his new position came with higher challenges because there were changes that needed to be done for efficiency and appealed to all members and staff, to cooperate with him as they sacrificed the things that brought comfort to them, for the welfare of all members.

Solidarity messages paid tribute to Mr Acheampong commending him for his competence, fairness, political neutrality and professionalism. He was also presented gifts and citations.
