AMA reviews closure of Makola Shopping Mall project

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has reviewed its closure measures imposed on the Makola Shopping Mall upgrading and expansion phase two project.

The AMA had directed the consultant of the contractors, Nii Okai Nunoo, to ensure that all safety measures have been put in place by Monday, May 30, for the AMA to consider re-opening the project.

The Mall was closed down until further notice after the contractors Jiangxi Zhongmei Engineering Limited had compromised safety measures, resulting in the death of a trader.

The victim, Miss Juliana Akweley Mensah, 28 and a mother of two, was struck by a falling object from the construction site along the Kojo Thompson road.

Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive made this known at a meeting with the Chinese contractors and the consultancy firm to ensure safety and avert future occurrence.

He expressed condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased.

Mr Nunoo in an interview with Ghana News Agency assured the public of their commitment to improve safety measures and services.

“For us to abide by our assurance, we have barricaded the whole construction site to prevent people coming closer and obstruction of vehicular traffic. Additionally, security has been placed there to ward off traders to the site,” he said.

Mr Nunoo said all necessary arrangement are being taken for compensation to be paid the deceased’s family by the Enterprise Insurance Company to take care of her children while the contractors bear the funeral expenses.
