Students asked to focus on entrepreneurial skills, not rely on government for jobs

Professor Mawutor Avoke, the Vice-chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has advised students to focus more on entrepreneurial skills rather than rely on government for employment after graduation.

He said the terrain of learning in the country had seen tremendous improvement, adding that market driven programmes had been introduced to link the classrooms to industries.

Professor Avoke said this at the matriculation ceremony of sandwich students at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre at North Campus in Winneba.

He advised the matriculants to ensure that they go through the programmes with the needed skills, competence, concepts, attitudes, hard work and a high sense of responsibility required in the education sector.

Prof. Avoke encouraged the matriculants to surmount any challenge with strength of mind, perseverance and patience adding; “the journey you have embarked on today is not an easy one.”

“You may encounter financial difficulties, unlimited time to submit assignment, uncooperative group study members and pressures from your families and employers to yield to their demands at the expense of your studies but don’t let that impede your focus.

“My advice to you is to know how to balance these demands. Visit the library often, form positive study groups and interact well with your lecturers during and after classes to help in grasping the theories that you are going to be introduced to,” he said.

Prof. Avoke urged students to keep trusting God for everything and focus on the ultimate reward of the certificate for which they have been enrolled.
