Aircraft incident to be simulated at KIA

KIAThe Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) would conduct a Full Scale Emergency Simulation Exercise at the Approach area of Runway 21 (Spintex Road area) of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

The event takes place on Saturday July 30, from 9:00am to 12pm.

The exercise, which is in line with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations, is organised every two years to test the State’s preparedness to handle emergency situations at the airport.

A statement issued by management of the GACL said the an Exercise Planning Team comprising representatives from the Ghana Army, Ghana Air Force, 37 Military Hospital, Ghana Police Service, Airline Operators Committee, Ghana National Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, GCAA and the GACL, had been mandated to develop and conduct the exercise scenario.

“The exercise, dubbed: “Abronoma 2016”, will take the form of a simulation of an aircraft incident and the subsequent response by the various agencies, which make up the Emergency Operations Control Group. It will affect portions of the Tema Motorway, Spintex and East Legon Police Station roads,” the statement said.

The exercise is expected to test the Airport’s readiness to handle aircraft emergencies and would be observed by a team of foreign experts from ICAO and Airports Council International.

“The GACL is wishes to inform the general public that there will be minimal interruptions to airport operations during the period of the exercise and further solicits the cooperation of all. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” it stated.
