Teachers urged to make schools gender-friendly
The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Jacob Kor, has asked teachers to make the school environment gender-friendly.
There should be deliberate efforts to support the girls to remain in school to live their academic dreams.
He was addressing the closing ceremony of the 54th teachers professional development workshop organized by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in partnership with the Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF).
He encouraged the teachers to be innovative and work with passion to improve classroom performance.
Mr. Kor said it was not true that the standard of education was falling and pointed out that the system continued to produce “brains that are competing with the best brains in the world”.
He rallied on stakeholders to come together to provide the necessary support to ensure effective teaching and learning.
He indicated that the GES was working hard to get those qualified, promoted and said the list was ready and that promotion interviews would be done soon.
The Director-General again assured teachers with unpaid allowances that measures were being put in place to clear those allowances.
Ms. Gifty Ampanbil, Deputy General Secretary of GNAT in charge of Education and Professional Development, complained about the poor conditions of service for education directors and said that was a disincentive – preventing many headmasters from accepting to take up such position.
She therefore called for a review of conditions of service of the directors.
