Accra Milo Marathon 2016 to attract 10,000 runners
The 29th edition of the Accra Milo Marathon billed for Wednesday September 21 is expected to attract 10,000 runners to battle for the GH¢15, 000 cash prize and products.
The marathon themed “Every Champion Starts by Taking a Giant Step” will be contested in two categories. The mass category, which will cover a distance of 42. 2km for adults and the 5km non- competitive Fun race to encourage family work out for physical health.
The mass race will start at the Nungua Police barrier through the principal streets of Accra, whilst the Fun race commences at the Salvation Army at Korle Gonno to the Dansoman Keep fit Club.
The annual race was launched on Wednesday at the Nestle Ghana Limited and saw the attendance of Former Black Stars Captain Stephen Appiah, the Minister of Tourism, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare and her Deputy, Dzifa Gomashie.
Speaking at the function, the President of the Dansoman Keep Fit Club, Daniel Welbeck, organisers of the event, said the marathon had been sustained over the years due to efficient organisation and the mutual relationship involving Nestle Ghana and the Dansoman Keep Fit Club.
According to Welbeck, this year’s edition would be colourful and successful and urged participants to adhere to the rules governing the competition, adding that, to ensure athletes are fully fit ahead of the competition, there will be a medical screening before the start of the race.
Antoinette Arkoh, Head of Human Resource of Nestle Ghana said his outfit’s commitment to developing sports in Ghana has kept them in close collaboration with the Dansoman Keep Fit Club for many years.
She said Nestle’s wish to be part of the nation’s success in growing future sports men and women has urged Nestle to be involved in events like the Accra Milo Marathon and the Milo U-13 Champions League tournaments.
The Managing Director of Nestle Ghana Freda Y. Duplan said the company will continue to inspire the youth to get into sports and believes that sports has a unique ability to help instill life values, such as hard work, responsibility, fair play, discipline, perseverance and team spirit.
Nestle, the World’s leading nutrition, health and Wellness Company is committed to promoting healthy diets and lifestyle and to support grass roots sports at the basic school level, including the Milo U-13 Champions League and the President Day’s Award, as well as the junior championship.
As part of the organisation, Milo has pledged to donate about 4,000 pairs of shoes to be distributed in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service.
Registration for the event starts on Friday August 19 to Monday, September 19,
