Upper West Regional Security Council bans harvesting of Rosewood
The Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has banned the harvesting of rosewood trees and ordered the security agencies to arrest persons found to be felling the trees.
The REGSEC has placed a ban on the movement of rosewood from the region since July 7, and the deadline given to the companies for lifting lying rosewood logs had expired, Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper West Regional Minister, said.
He urged security agencies at the check points and barriers to seize all such wood intended to be transported outside the region.
Alhaji Sulemana announced this at a meeting with heads of departments and agencies held in Wa on Thursday.
The meeting was also held to discuss ways to improve the standards of living of the people.
The RCC also discussed issues concerning the maintenance of peace and security, education, health, expansion of roads and other social interventions being implemented.
He cautioned officials of the Forestry Commission to cooperate fully with security agencies to save the forest from total destruction.
The harvesting of rosewood trees in the region by some timber companies has led to a public outcry on the need to protect the invaluable plant species.
The media in the region have also carried stories and articles on the wanton destruction of rosewood trees in the communities, yet the felling of the tree are ongoing in certain sections of the Wa East District.
The Wa East District has been adjudged as a major food producing district of the region but with the wanton destruction of the environment, agriculturists and subsistence farmers are fearing that the area is been exposed to desertification.

finally. some sanity. two things.
1. We will realize after we have logged and sold the rosewood that at a nation we’ve suffered a loss and as people in the areas, the’ve gotten closer to the Sahara. If you cut your tongue and cook it for food, that is not meat at all.
2. The ‘profit making’ public officers who’s new obligation is to make gains rather then be professional; and happily grant or granted permits for immoral’ companies to convey the rosewood logs…shame on you.
