Ex-workers of GPHA want GH¢20b gratuity

Ex workers of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), have described as unfortunate media reports attributed to the Port authorities that they do not owe the more than 3000 former employees compensation.

According to Stephen Ashitey Adjei, Leader of the ex workers, he was aware that GH¢ 20 billion was released as compensation to them and they were demanding it.

He told the Ghana News Agency in Accra that so far only five of the workers retrenched in 2002 have been given their severance awards.

He described as false the report, which described them as casual labourers.

“According to Article 19 (ii) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement of non permanent employee who has worked continuously for 154 days within a calendar year shall be confirmed in the permanent establishment of the Authority,” Mr Adjei said.

He said after a number of attempts to get the GPHA to pay up had failed, the ex workers petitioned Parliament, the former and late President John Evans Mills and President John Dramani Mahama.

He warned that the ex workers would use every legitimate means to get their monies paid.
