Steven Gerrard ends playing career after 19 years
Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard said Thursday he has retired from professional football after almost two decades.
Gerrard, 36, played 708 games at Anfield between 1998 and 2015 highlighted by the 2005 Champions League title. He then spent 18 months at the Los Angeles Galaxy. The midfielder also has 114 England cups.
“I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy,” he said.
“I am currently taking my time to consider a number of options and will make an announcement with regards to the next stage of my career very soon.”
Gerrard has been linked with a return to Anfield in a coaching capacity. He was also in talks on becoming manager to third-tier club MK Dons but those have ended.
