British drugs fugitive arrested in Ghana jailed

The British drugs fugitive who was arrested in Ghana and extradited to the UK, David McDermott has been jailed for 13 years, according to a BBC report.

43-year-old McDermott was wanted in connection with a plot to import 400kg of cocaine from South America into the UK.

McDermott and four others, allegedly held a meeting at the KFC in Liverpool UK May 16, 2013, and discussed the importation of the 400kg of cocaine that was intercepted in beef imported from Argentina.

He fled to Ghana when he was sought by authorities for his role in the conspiracy to import the £71 million worth of cocaine in 2013.

While on the run in Ghana for three years, McDermott married a Ghanaian woman called Ramona.

He was the last man wanted – six have been jailed for a total of 64 years, reports say.

McDemott was arrested in Ghana on March 11, 2016, based on an extradition request issued by the British High Commission to the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Ghana and extradited to the UK after a court case in which he challenged his extradition.

According to court records McDermott was expecting to take a 50kg portion of the smuggled cocaine.
