Former President Mahama in Abuja to discuss Gambia’s impasse

Former President John Dramani Mahama on Monday left Accra to Abuja, Nigeria to attend an Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) meeting on the situation in The Gambia.

The Former Ghanaian President, who handed over power to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Saturday, January 7, has been asked to continue his mediation role in the effort to resolve The Gambian political crisis.

A statement from the Office of the Former President and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said at a meeting of ECOWAS held on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony of President Akufo-Addo, the leaders requested the former President to continue to assist President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria as co-Mediator in The Gambian issue.

The statement said President Akufo-Addo personally conveyed the ECOWAS decision to the former President in a telephone conversation on Sunday, January 8, 2017.

It expressed confidence that with the help of President Mahama, President Buhari would be able to realise a peaceful resolution of The Gambia impasse.
