Ghanaian Gender advocates ready for CSW61

Scores of Ghanaian Gender Advocates are participating in the 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 13 to 24.    

The Ghanaian gender advocates are expected to ensure that the national agenda from the civil society perspective is projected effectively in the CSW processes, to influence CSW outcomes and conclusions.

The CSW61 is on the general theme: “Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work,” would also focus on challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls (agreed conclusions of the fifty-eighth session; and emerging issue.   

CSW61 document obtained by Ghana News Agency indicates that CSW61 would also seek on modalities for empowerment of indigenous women.

Personalities lined for the ten-day event includes: Mr. Antonio de Aguiar Patriota (Brazil), Chair (Latin American and Caribbean States Group); Ms. Fatma Al Zahraa Hassan (Egypt), Vice-Chair (African States Group); and Ms. Šejla urbuzovi (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Vice-Chair (Eastern European States Group).

Others are: Mr. Jun Saito (Japan), Vice-Chair (Asia-Pacific States Group) and Mr. Andreas Glossner (Germany), Vice-Chair (Western European and other States Group). 

The Ghanaian delegation would include women’s rights activists; gender experts, government representatives, as well as representatives from gender based civil society organizations, and traditional leaders.    

Government delegation led by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection would take advantage of the platform to showcase the nation’s gender mainstreaming policies, organize side events to share “our progressive success story,” hold high-level discussions with governmental and non-governmental organizations alongside the conference.    

As part of preparation towards CSW61, a multi-stakeholder forum was organized on January 30, 2017 under the auspices of the UN Women to engage a range of stakeholders in the preparations for CSW61.    

The Expert Group Meeting in preparation for the CSW61, the UN Women convened an Expert Group Meeting on the priority theme: “Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work.”    

The Expert Group Meeting was held with the technical contribution and support of the International Labour Organization (ILO) at ILO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from September 26 to 28, 2016.   

The CSW is functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It is the principal global policy making body dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women.   

Every year, representatives of member states gather at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide.
