Drivers blame lighting system of Yutong buses for accidents

Commercial drivers in the Techiman Municipality have complained about the lighting systems of the Yutong buses which plied the major highways in the country at night.

According to the drivers, the high lights of the buses were not favourable, as they blurred the visibility of drivers coming from opposite directions.

They observed that the situation  contributed to most of the fatal accidents which occured on the highways at night and recommended immediate measures to solve the problem.

The commercial drivers, who drive mostly 207 and Sprinter vehicles made the complaint during a road safety education campaign at some lorry stations in the  municipality.

It was organised by the Brong-Ahafo Regional office of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC).

The drivers further complained about the several potholes that had been developed on some of the highways in the country.

They appealed to government to reshape and expand the Techiman-Sunyani main road and also  repair portions of the Sunyani-Kumasi highway to bring sanity on the road.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Andrews Okonengye, the Techiman Municipal Police Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department expressed discomfort about the situation and advised the drivers to avoid over-speeding.

He assured them that the police and the NRSC would follow up with their complaints and warned the drivers against drunk-driving.     

Mr Kwesi Agyenim Boateng, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Planning Officer of the NRSC entreated the drivers to adhere to road traffic regulations and signals and avoid wrongful overtaking.

He told them to check their brakes, lighting systems and tyres regularly before travelling.
