Rain wrecks havoc in Assin North and South

Scene at a house in Accra after rains

Two hours of torrential rain accompanied by strong winds on Tuesday, flooded some communities in the Assin South and North Districts of the Central Region.

The affected communities were Besease, Mempeasem, Pop-site, Domeabra, Nsuakyire and Kwataa.

At Assin Besease and Ando, river “Okye” the biggest river in the area overflew its boundaries and blocked the main Yamoransa-Kumasi highway.

This impeded traffic flow and created heavy vehicular and human congestion making it difficult for people from either sides of the river to cross.

At Assin Kwataa, a Mitsubishi Pajero which was driving towards Assin Fosu but parked along the street due to poor visibility was mangled by a broken tree that crashed into it.

A resident, Mrs. Ernestina Boateng in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the water had destroyed all her electronic appliances and other properties running into thousands of Ghana cedis and blamed the flooding on indiscriminate disposal of waste and chocked gutters.

The GNA observed that many of the affected houses were those built in flood prone areas and on water ways.

Several people were seen collecting buckets of water from their rooms whilst others counted their loses from the debris.

Mr. Enock Baidoo, a victim called on the district assembly to stop issuing building permits to prospective developers on waterways to end the perennial flooding in the area and urged them to demolish all unauthorized structures in water-ways.

He asked the government to maintain the sanitation day which is held on the first Saturday of every month.
