Ghana Starlets fail to lift third U-17 Africa Cup

The Black Starlets of Ghana failed to lift their third African Youth Championship trophy after suffering a 1:0 defeat to Mali in Libreville on Sunday.

Malian attacker, Momadou Samake broke the deadlock by converting a penalty rebound, after Faisal Osman’s penalty was parried by Starlets goalie Ibrahim Danlad.

Mali, who are the defending champions, were awarded a second penalty in the 31st minute after Abdul Razak Yusif had brought down Fode Konate, however, Danlad Ibrahim saved Seme Camara’s strike to deny the Malians another goal.

The Black Starlets came into the game by dominating play in he midfield, but failed to penetrate the resolute defense of the Mali team.

The Malians lone goal was enough to successfully defend the trophy they won in South Africa two years ago.

Meanwhile, Guinea beat Niger 3:1 to finish third.

Mali, Ghana, Guinea and Niger would represent Africa in the FIFA Youth Championship to be held in India later this year.
