IGP charges Commanders to engage public in policing
Mr David Asante Apeatu, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has charged Police commanders to engage the public to bring about law and order in the society.
In a speech read on his behalf at the closing ceremony of a five-week Senior Command Course Four of the Ghana Police Command and Staff College at Winneba, he said this could check mob action.
He said it was unfortunate that the Police were being blamed for not doing anything about the phenomenon.
Superintendent Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo was adjudged the Overall Best Officer of the course, Supt Francis Kweku Yirbaare, Second Best Officer, Chief Supt Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, third and Chief Supt Lydia Yaako Donkor, was fourth.
Mr Apeatu said: “This should not continue. I urged all divisional and other Unit Commanders to design proactive strategies to deal with the phenomenon of mob action, quick, comprehensive and complete handling of cases to their logical conclusion to engender more public confidence in the service.”
He said the police should not hesitate to engage people, educate them, and seek their understanding and support to execute their operations.
“Let us not relent on our motto ‘Service with Integrity’,” he said.
He assured the public that a very innovate recruitment policy had been set in motion to turn the Motto Traffic and Transport Department of the Service into a more responsive, respected and accountable body.
This will move it away from the bad press it has brought upon the Service in respect of activities of some of the personnel.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Charles Kpapu Torkor Commandant of the Command and Staff College said the course had so far attracted 626 officers.
The covered topics like police operational strategies, investigations and national security issues.
The participants donated cooking utensils, two air conditioners and a mower to the College.
