Ejisu-Juaben Assembly suffocates under debt
The Ejisu-Juaben Municipal Assembly has been struggling with a huge debt of GH¢1,093,224.00, a significant percentage of which is not to be covered by appropriate documents.
Madam Beatrice Serwaa-Derkyi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who announced this said large chunk of the debt was accumulated in the last quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of this year.
Addressing an ordinary meeting of the assembly at Ejisu, she indicated that there was going to be an audit and that until this was completed no payment would be effected.
She was emphatic that the assembly would not be paying any debt found to be doubtful.
Madam Serwaa-Derkyi stated that out of the total amount owed GH¢93,332.00 had proper documents covering it.
The remaining either had insufficient or no documents covering them, she added.
The municipal assembly set a revenue target of GH¢11,822,870.00, last year, but realized GH¢10,012,363.00.
The MCE called for the strengthening and intensification of the assembly’s revenue mobilization effort to bring in more money to tackle the felt needs of the people.
She also underlined the need to ensure greater transparency in management of its finances and urged the members to accept to work together to make this happened.
