Vigilante groups a bane to democracy and National development – Quantson
Mr. Kofi Quantson, a Former National Security Coordinator, has called on citizens to re-introduce the sense of responsibility and patriotism among the growing youths to curtail the social vices that is becoming acceptable in the society.
“We are gradually killing the nation; we have become stateless persons through actions. We are losing out on love for our communities and the country as a whole,” he lamented.
The Former National Security Coordinator said this on the sidelines during a roundtable discussion on the menace of Political Party Vigilantism organized by the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) in the Western Region.
Mr. Quantson, also a retired Police Commander was worried that the rate of acceptability of all forms of vices including the formation of vigilante groups to shake the ‘peace fabric’ of society was not in the interest of the nation and its quest to advance in democracy and development.
Such vigilante groups, according to the Retired Commander, have blossom into full organizations in other countries and continually destabilized the peace and economic growth.
He therefore called on state institutions mandated to promote peace and stability to work at ‘nipping all these groups in the bud’.
“Our nation needs to progress in a positive direction. We urgently need the sense of responsibility, love for country and one another back to avert the growing indiscipline in society,” he added.
Mr. Nicholas Kodzo Akyire, CODEO Advisory Board Member, said a survey conducted among the populace revealed that the lack of trust in the security agencies, breakdown in morals and patriotism and political manipulations were key issues that threatened social security.
He in this regard suggested the reactivation of the inter party dialogue committee to work on matters bordering on election disputes and misunderstanding to restore confidence among the citizenry, adding, “The Security and Integrity of the country must be paramount”.
