Court sentences two unemployed men to 15 years imprisonment
For robbing a teacher of her handbag containing a bible, mobile phone, cash of GH¢170 and personal effects, two unemployed men have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.
Abeiku Amissah and Stephen Nyarko were found guilty on the charges of conspiracy to rob and robbery at the end of the trial.
The two are said to have armed themselves with a machete and threatened the complainant to surrender her bag on her way to board a vehicle at the Madina Lorry Station.
The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, handing over the sentences, said it took into consideration the remorse displayed by the accused persons and the number of days spent in custody.
Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kwaku Bempah said the complainant, Ms Patience Frema Owusu resides at Ada while the accused persons were unemployed and residents of Madina.
On June 10, last year, Ms Asare paid a visit to her mother and was returning to the Ada Lorry station when Amissah, Nyarko and one Kofi now at large, attacked her at Zongo Junction.
During the attack, Ms Asare resisted and Amissah pulled out a cutlass compelling her to surrender her bag containing the money and items.
Luck, however, eluded the convicts when a Police Officer who was his way to duty apprehended Amissah, who mentioned Nyarko and Kofi as his accomplices.
Prosecution said during investigations, Nyarko and Amissah admitted the offence and stated that at about 0400 hours on June 10, last year they met at a popular joint known as Masalatsi at Madina and decided to go on a robbery expedition.
According to the prosecutor, Amissah led the Police to the Madina Market where the stolen bag had been abandoned and its contents were nowhere to be found.
Prosecution said Amissah admitted sharing the booty with Kofi a.k.a forever Young who is still at large.
