Exhibition of professionalism is essential, Minister urges GIS personnel
Mr Ambrose Dery, Minister of Interior, has called on the personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to exhibit high levels of professionalism and courtesy in the discharge of their duties.
He said the personnel must be alert and effectively secure the country’s borders adding that with the integration of the world economies, people with diverse objectives and intentions were travelling across nations in the name of investments.
Mr Derry, the Interior Minister, visited the Regional office of the Immigration Services as part of his two-day tour of some security institutions and installations in the region.
He said some of these migrants were committing acts which were detrimental to the development of the nation adding that the surest way to attract the needed investments to promote Government’s industrializing efforts would be to secure the borders.
To achieve that, Mr Dery demanded that the personnel of the GIS lived up to their task by identifying, preventing and apprehending miscreants possessing fraudulent travelling documents, engaging in human trafficking, smuggling, drug and small arms trafficking and other cross border crimes to ensure the territorial integrity of the nation.
He lauded their efforts in child trafficking across borders to protect the hard won reputation of the country adding that the Ministry will work to build the capacity of GIS through training and workshops to enhance their capacities on the principles and dimensions of border security and management.
Mr Dery said border management has recently become more widely perceived as a frontline of the struggle against a variety of old and new threats including trans-national crime, drug running, arms proliferation, human trafficking as well as spill-over from intra state conflicts.
He said Government would adequately equip them as the frontline security agencies to exercise total control over legal borders.
Chief Superintendent Kenneth G Arhinful, Acting Regional GIS Commander, praised the Minister for visiting them and appealed to him to support them setup district offices to increase their presence in other parts of the region.
This, he said, will enhance data collection to effectively check and monitor the movement of people, goods, drugs and human trafficking and bring their service to the door step of the people.
