Judges comply with CJ’s directive 

Judges in Lower and Superior Courts in Accra, on Thursday begun the wearing of their wigs and robes during sittings.

An exclusive visit to the courts by a Ghana News Agency team observed that many judges who hitherto do not wear their wigs and robes had complied with the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo’s directives.
 
Scores of media entities in Accra on Wednesday quoted the Chief Justice as directing all Judges to with immediate effect begin the wearing of the symbolic wigs during court sittings.

The directive by the Chief Justice also instructed judges to ensure they are fully attired in robes alongside the wigs.

According to sources, the directives were contained in an internal memo from the Judicial Secretary to all judges.

The memo explained that, the directive was to preserve the tradition and uniqueness of the work of Judges and the legal profession.

It also explained that, the wearing of the wigs will enhance the security of judges and also provide them the needed protection and anonymity required in the administration of justice.

It said the new directive also aimed at restoring the formal nature of court[u1] proceedings, and eliminate what she describes as the “creeping casualness in the judicial system.”

Meanwhile during this exclusive visit by the GNA team it was observed the Courts in Accra, the temperature in most of the Circuit Courts was warm due to the lack of air conditions and the number of people who had turn up in the courts.

The Circuit Courts have therefore resorted to the use of standing fans to make the temperatures conducive, GNA however noted most of these courts were still warm, as its users were seen often wiping sweat from their faces and others using newspapers to fan themselves.
